"Opinion: Damage Breakpoints are bad gameplay, and damage/HP values should be floating point during battle"
#PokemonGO: I do not like the concept of damage breakpoints. I understand the technical aspect of integer math (I write software for a living), but it seems silly to me from a gameplay perspective that in a certain scenario your fast attack will do the same damage at (potentially greatly) different levels, or at (potentially greatly) different IVs for the same level. When an player hits “power up”, they expect to deal more damage. Period. Better stats should yield bigger numbers, but because the game uses integer math for combat damage and HP, and because fast attacks do relatively low damage, you could power up a Pokémon 5 times and have roughly the same DPS as you started, and you could power up a Pokémon once and see a massive jump in DPS because you hit a fast attack breakpoint.A player shouldn’t have to be thinking about “My Pokémon is 29 and needs to power up to 31.5 or else I won’t hit a breakpoint and I won’t see a meaningful DPS increase”. A player should never be presented with a situation where they stop powering up a Pokémon before it hits max because any further increases won’t change how much damage their fast attack deals.During battle, HP and damage dealt should be floating point. Every IV and every power up should actually matter. Higher stats should always manifest as higher performance. After battle, you would ceiling your remaining HP. Outside of battle, HP would remain an integer, for the purpose of clarity with healing items. The effect this would have on raids would be a small net buff to attackers, since in the worst case you deal the same damage as before, and in all other cases you are dealing slightly more damage. Low-damage fast-hitting moves would see the biggest improvement, since their current breakpoints are few and far between. via /r/TheSilphRoad https://ift.tt/2FhiarU
