"Gift receiving etiquette - if I have none to return should I still open the gift?"

#PokemonGO: So I posted my code and got 33 friend requests and one thing I'm very adamant about is that I won't open a gift until I have one to return. I've had people who accept gifts and never give them back to me and it's kinda shitty so I just leave gifts there until I can return them so no one's getting shafted.I saw a post here that had over a hundred upvotes where someone was expressing how frustrating it is when people don't open gifts. Whether it's quests or friend xp or something else I'm unaware of clearly there's people who feel strongly about it so I'd like to ask what the general consensus is here.
