"I need help understanding Pokemon books"

I am a confused old women. I need help finding the correct set of Pokemon books to buy for my son. I don't understand Pokemon, and I've tried Googling this but I'm not sure I've got the right thing as it turns up similar looking things.My son really likes the Pokemon Adventures books, the ones that are in English but read in the Japanese order if you get what I mean.He has the red and blue box set which is books 1-7. He also has the Gold and Silver box set which is books 8 - 14.Is the next one the 'Ruby and Sapphire arc'? It seems to be a different character.
