"Why I believe Iris had a poor reception amongst anime fans"

I know she has her fans, especially nowadays due to nostalgia and BW kids growing up, but she's always been a very mixed character. I remember Iris getting relentless hatred throughout BW.Fans don't hate Iris. Her game and manga counterparts are both well-liked. They hate the specific anime take on Iris, in the same way that people hate anime Erika but not game Erika. The main issue with Iris is her personality. People call her a "discount Misty" but she's missing what made Misty a good and interesting character: Ash and Misty actually bounced off each other.Ash during Kanto and Johto was a cocky brat with a smart mouth. He's far removed from the constantly happy and sweet kid we know today. Ash became this way through character development.Back during Kanto, Misty would insult and prod at Ash, but he would insult and prod at her back. They had a mutually antagonistic friendship. It was clear they didn't berate each other in the same way Ash and Gary did-- it was just play in the end and they did care for one another.Ash in BW just takes most of Iris' insults. He doesn't have the same attitude he had back in Kanto. This just makes Iris come off as a brat and a bully. As far as I know, Misty didn't have a real catchphrase. She used to call Ash "Ash Ketchum" when she was really mad, but that's about it. Iris constantly says Ash is "just a kid", which get grating when done too much. The worst part is that Iris was just as kiddie as Ash. The joke is that Iris is being hypocritical when she insults Ash, but it doesn't come off as a joke when it's done so much. It just makes her seem like an immature bully. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/3wM36wx
