"What happened to the fan reception to the original Pokemon Sun and Moon?"
Back in 2016, the start of the seventh generation of Pokemon had an unreasonable amount of hype to live up to. It was the franchise’s 20th anniversary and TPCi was firing on all cylinders to celebrate. Pokemon Go had come out on mobile devices and took the entire world by storm, bringing in new and lapsed fans into the franchise on a scale not seen since the 90s Pokemania. The X and Y anime was also wrapping up, with many considering it one of the show’s best seasons ever, even with a slightly contrived ending for Ash leaving behind his Greninja. And the original Game Boy games were finally re-released on the 3DS Virtual Console (RIP) for the very first time, and they had transfer compatibility with Pokemon Bank as well.Pokemon Sun and Moon were set to be the games that really shook up the Pokemon formula after so many years of the same old same old. Gym challenges were replaced with island challenges, HMs were removed in favor of the Pokemon Ride feature, regional variants like Alolan Vulpix and Raichu, a new gimmick in Z-Moves, and plenty other shifts that you may or may not agree with. Sun and Moon were arguably the biggest 3DS games of 2016 outside of Kirby Planet Robobot, and they became some of the most preordered games in the Americas. But fan reception seems to have soured in the years since the original launch. Based on what I could gather, the biggest complaints people had about it were the obtrusive cutscenes and tutorials, technical performance on original 3DS models, removing the fan favorite PSS online system in favor of Festival Plaza, and the removal of the National Dex from within the game itself (different from the Sword and Shield thing). It’s soured to the point where I can comfortably describe Sun and Moon as the Zelda Skyward Sword of the franchise. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/9vR0YjX
