"A real world test of distance tracking on iPhone vs Android"

#PokemonGO: So a few days ago I had a pretty interesting experience. A friend of mine came to visit and we did some late night pokémon hunting. When we started our journey back home, we realized we could do a little experiment for this sub.He has a Lenovo K5, and i have an iPhone 6S. We were both on the same network, connected via 3G, plugged in my car's outlet. The drive back home consists of a straight road along a beach. This road is 6.8 km in length and we were in one the ends, my place being in the other end. It was 4 a.m. so there were absolutely no other cars around.Starting with recently restarted phones, with no other apps in the background, we opened the game, put a brand new 5k egg in an incubator and started driving. Keep in mind that, at this point, the only difference between my Pokémon Go experience and his was our phone model. We were going at the same speed, covering the same distance, in the same network, both with a 3G connection. Our speed during the entire test hovered between 9 km/h and 11 km/h. We recorded no sudden jumps or loss of GPS signal. We didn't interact with the phone in any way except for checking the egg process at the (roughly) halfway point. After 3 km, we decided to see how our eggs were going. My egg had recorded a total of 1.3 km, while his egg had recorded 2.9 km.At the end of the 6.8 km drive, my egg recorded 1.9 km, while his had hatched 1 km ago. I parked and waited 5 minutes to see if my egg would record any "left over" data, but nope, still 1.9 km.We did our best to account for all variables we could think of. In the end the difference in distance tracked between our phones was huge, much more than I'd consider a margin of error. via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2bMhJXF
