"[Analysis] How the Apple Watch tracks distance"

#PokemonGO: TL;DR : the Apple Watch only uses it's own sensors to measure distance for eggs and buddy when the app isn't open in the background on the iPhone. Otherwise it still uses the normal method of measuring distance by using the GPS of the phone. So I wanted to test if the Apple Watch app uses it's own sensors to measure distance for your buddy and eggs. So this is how I tested it. I stood still in my room and moved my arms like I was walking so that the Watch would think I was walking and it would track distance that way. After every test I waited at least 4 minutes in case the app had to communicate with the server. I did this in multiple situations: * PoGo is completely closed (so it is not in the multitasking list), I tested this twice. * PoGo is open on the iPhone * PoGo is running in the background on the iPhone (so it is in the multitasking list) * PoGo is running in the background using the PoGo+These are my results: PoGo completely closed: First test: *Before:0,32/2 km *Distance measured by Watch: 0,32 km *After: 0,64 /2 km Second test: *Before: 0,64/2 km *Watch: 0,34 km *After: 0,88/ 2 kmPoGo open on iPhone *Before: 0,64 / 2km *Measured by Watch: 0,26 km *After: 0,64 /2 kmPoGo open in background (open in multitasking) *Before: 0,64 / 2 km *Measured by Watch: 0,24km *After: 0,64 / 2 kmPoGo open in background using PoGo+ *Before: 0,64 km *Measured by watch: 0,25 km *After: 0,64So with these results I can conclude that if the app is open in any way on the iPhone, it will use the GPS of the iPhone and use the normal method of measuring distance for eggs and your buddy. In this situation the distance measured by the Watch will only be used for the Health app. But if the app is not open on the iPhone, it will use the distance measured by the Watch for eggs and buddy. So people with an Apple Watch could technically use a treadmill and still gain distance for their eggs and buddy Pokémon, but only if the app is completely closed on your iPhone!I would also like to say that I have a series 2 Apple Watch and it didn't use the built in GPS of the Watch, the Watch measures distance by your movement.EDIT: like some of you have suggested, the best way to make it work is to first open the app on your iPhone and then start the workout on the Watch. Then completely close the app on your phone (you can lock your phone if you want to) and it should measure distance by movement via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2impFk2
