"Thinking about it, the Ultra Beast sidequest was a smart move"
One of the big appeals to the new Pokémon games is discovering the new Pokémon. With every generation, people prepare themselves by 'going in blind', and avoiding everything to do with each new game so that they're surprised by the new Pokémon when they find them. However, every Pokémon you encounter already has a name and is already known throughout the Pokémon World, somewhat making the encounters not as exciting. But, the Ultra Beast quest kind of averts this. You encounter a creature that is completely unknown to science, and everything that is known about it is essentially rumours and supposed sighting, similar to cryptid sightings. When you encounter them for the first time, they don't even have a name, and the sheer scarcity of these creatures make them feel all the more special when you catch them. It actually makes you feel like you're the one discovering them. via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2jZi0Mk
