"Safety awareness post. Third party apps like gymhuntr are storing and sharing historic gym capture data. What does this mean for you?"

#PokemonGO: Recently a leak of a cheating/stalking tool related to Niantics other game Ingress happened. Details can be found here and here.In investigating this tool, and how it and Niantic reactions could impact Pokemon go, it was revealed to me by a trainer that Gymhuntr, a popular tool used in large part for raid tracking, does in a small part what the Brokers Guild did.It stores, and makes publicly accessible historic gym ownership data. Here is an example screenshot of what that looks like today for one gym. While it seems limited in scope for now, the possibility of some one exporting this data and storing it is huge, and has already happened on a wide scale in Ingress which is a significantly less popular game. This data could be used to track your play patterns, and possibly identify your home work and school to people who are willing to spend the time scanning gyms you hit.It would only take a small amount of effort for some one to export this data and make it quickly searchable to determine where you show up most frequently. While I am sure that no harm is intended by the developers of this tool, I can not see a single realistic in game application of knowing what players were on a gym historically. We often take our personal data like this for granted, but none of us agreed to having our play styles tracked by a third party. All it takes is 1 disgruntled trainer who you knocked out at 11 59 pm so they didnt get coins the next day to use this for malicious reasons.Play safe trainers, and play wise. via /r/pokemongo http://ift.tt/2hnjP3J
