"Graphs on Draco Meteor - Salamence & Dragonite"

#PokemonGO: TL;DR: Overall, OR > DM on Dragonite almost alwaysBy now this sub is fully aware that Outrage is generally superior to Draco Meteor in raiding and is much better for gyming. In u/biowpn's in-depth analysis, he concluded:"Outrage is the winner, but Draco Meteor is situationally better. In the cases with small x (few or none fast moves used after the last charge move), Draco Meteor wins. Since those cases are uncommon, Outrage wins over 80% of the time."The thing that rubs me about DPS models is that while they consider the full spectrum of scenarios, we will only witness so many in practice. One thing that stood out to me when u/Celandro updated Pokebattler with Draco Meteor Dragonite was how it stood above Outrage vs Outrage Rayquaza and how Salamence still took a dump (relatively) in that matchup. So I decided to take a closer look.Vs Outrage Rayquaza - [Graph]Two things that standout in this graph is that the DPS of OR Dnite and DM Mence are quite similar, but DM Dnite has a clear advantage. It's kind of hard to see where OR Dnite and DM Mence intersect with each other's averages. This view makes it more apparent that OR Dnite has ~10% advantage over DM Mence. Note that this is DPS only and doesn't take into account TDO (Total Damage Output, damage done before fainting). Dnite's TDO has an even greater advantage since Dragonite lasts longer in the fight. This matchup is a perfect example of the "1 DM > 1 OR > 0 DM" argument.Checking Pokebattler's battlelogs of the fight and investigating Salamence and Dragonite's bulkpoints, at level 36 Dragonite is able to survive 1 OR and 1 fast move from Rayquaza, a feat that Salamence cannot match. As a result, not only can an OR Dnite secure 1 solid OR almost all the time, but because it will faint after 2 fast moves it also has enough time to reliably use DM. However, due to the time it takes to cast OR, Dnite is less likely to get off 2 ORs. Since DPS is potentiated by fainting immediately after charge move use, this makes DM Dnite generally better in this matchup. Salamence isn't that fortunate and would appreciate having OR in its movepool. What's that drop off on Salamence? At level 40, Dragonite's Dragon Tail DPS against Rayquaza is 17.27 (19/1.1s) and Salamence's is 18.18 (20/1.1s). Therefore, it'd stand to reason that their averages should always be above that, and yet 25% of Salamence's simulations are below that. The best way to put it, these are the situations where Salamence swung and missed.Draco Meteor has a long cooldown of 3.6s and has active damage at 3s. If Salamence faints before that 3s, it will have essentially wasted a third of its time alive doing basically nothing but trying its best. While I'm not aware of how forgiving Pokebattler is with fainting mid charge move, we have witnessed raid boss damage rebound after the "active" damage phase, suggesting these "missed swings" may be more prevalent than the graph suggests. When you consider that the DPS spike on the right is potentiated by fainting immediately after using DM, rebounding damage could rob those simulations as well, watering down Salamence's DPS further.Vs Aerial Ace Rayquaza - [Graph]What stands out in this graph compared to the last one is that DM Dnite is performing much worse than OR and that DM Salamence is taking the lead on DPS.Since AA is so weak, Salamence has more opportunities to reliably land a Draco Meteor and has its average increased in general due to landing more Dragon Tails (which have ~1 more base line DPS than Dragonite's). For Dragonite, this is an example of how getting 5 or 3 ORs off is better than 2 or 1 DMs.If you consider the slopes of the charge moves and the rebounding damage glitch, OR Dragonite is even closer to DM Mence's average. If you're curious, both pale in comparison to Rayquaza.ConclusionsLooking at the broad spectrum of scenarios of DM vs OR, it's clear that OR is generally superior. However, which Pokemon is using the charge move (Salamence or Dragonite) and specific matchups limit the spectrum. There are and will be matchups where DM is the move of choice for Dragonite, but is generally too risky to consider. Considering DM's advantage can be stunted by rebounding damage glitches, turning 3s of DPS spike into 3s of standing around and looking pretty, DM looks even more risky.Overall, OR > DM on Dragonite almost always. That battle animation tho. via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2ERqSi7
