"I messed up"

I decided to introduce my 7 year old cousin to pokemon, and I figured Pokémon Fire red was a good game to start with.He's into it, but he's stuck in Viridian forest trying to go back to Pallet for some reason. He complains about wanting to catch a pokemon, and so I try to weaken it for him , and KO the pidgey he was fighting due to lack of attention. As it let out the fainting cry, I realized this was not a normal pidgey. It was a shiny pidgey.I yelled "No!". He asked me what was wrong, and I said I used the wrong attack and I didn't wanna waste it.
