"Let players earn coins in other ways"

#PokemonGO: I'm coming back into Pokemon Go and participated in Zapdos day recently and realized something. As an Instinct player in a town run over by Mystic and Valor (doubt this is uncommon) often I don't get to hold gyms very long. This shuts me out from earning coins which I found out is pretty vital especially with the incoming raid events. It would be great if Niantic would let players earn coins through field research or gifting or other aspects of the game. Not everyone is able to hold gyms and it doesn't make sense to lock a portion of players from the currency of the game...Edit: I just want to clarify that I'm not asking for free coins, just alternative ways to earn them.
