"Your alternative to gyms"

So with Alola entering its sunset era people are already starting to come out and say how "bad" totems and trials were, yet some will also say that we still need an alternative to gyms, just not those. I disagree because totems were challenging (especially Wishiwashi) and overall a breath of fresh air, and I have yet to really come across any decent alternatives to either. So what I'm getting at is this: how would you do things differently?I think if I had to make an alternative, I might make it more of a tournament based system. Instead of 8 badges, you have 4 tournaments that you enter at various times (let's say timing advances with story progression), and your job is to make it to the end for all of them. You may choose your battle style (singles, doubles, etc), and at the end you have the honor of fighting the "champion" of each ring. The champion is different because they don't focus on type but rather personal theming (ie one person may focus on elegance, one may focus on dominance and toughness, etc).Beat one champion and you're allowed to enter the next tournament, and so on and so forth. After beating the 4 tournaments, you have access to The Master's League where you'd fight others in your position until you get to the Elite 4 and a Grand Champion. Instead of badges, you earn trophies and BP which can be used for TMs, tutors, items, clothes, or "adopting" a particular pokemon (so you're not just buying it). You can go back to any tournament you've beaten to grind levels or points as well.To break it up, you'd probably investigate stuff locally or nearby the city the tournament is located in order to solve mysteries, catch or beat problem pokemon, deal with general shenanigans, etc. After beating a tournament, you proceed to the next routes and towns to deal with until you can enter the next one. In lieu of types based gym leaders or totems you probably have some type based enemy trainers in the tournaments or field.Anyway, that's my take, how about you? via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/2zKVYEf
