"Pokemon Go and ADHD"

#PokemonGO: Mods - if this post is too far from the intended spirit of this site, feel free to remove it.As an adult with ADHD who has a child with ADHD, I'm always paying attention to what types of things help us, which demand our attention in unproductive/destructive ways, and which just provide a mindless escape. I'd previously written off my Pokemon Go addiction to the latter, but lately I've realized it may be more than that.Stats show ppl with ADHD have almost a 60% lifetime risk of substance abuse - particularly if it's untreated or undiagnosed. It's not atypical for them to self-medicate with marijuana, alcohol, etc. to slow their minds, cure their boredom when there isn't enough stimulation, or mask the more challenging and painful aspects of life. They're also naturally interested in things that challenge them, have novelty, and a sense of urgency. All things Niantic has mastered here. With so much news about video games making kids anxious, more violent or decreasing their attention spans, Pokemon Go actually seems to address a dopamine imbalance while providing a fun, free (sorta) and even healthy way for ppl with ADHD to fill a potentially dangerous void.It would be interesting to learn if there's a higher than average concentration of ppl with ADHD here or in the Pokemon Go community. And if so, is it something medical experts are/should be looking at? via /r/TheSilphRoad https://ift.tt/2AGsbg5
