"For all you Unova fans..."

There's something I always noticed about N that I thought was rather interesting. I never saw this being mentioned anywhere else, but if it was and it just happened to not notice it, I apologize. What I noticed about N was his eyes.As a general rule of thumb in anime-style art, someone's eyes have reflections of light in them, a "shine" in their eyes. In Pokemon, it is generally represented by a single white circle located at the top of the iris. It helps to give life to the character, to make them seem alive and human. For all of Black and White, N has no shine in his eyes. When you first see what his face looks like in Nimbasa City, we can clearly see that his eyes lack a shine. There are few characters in all of Pokemon that have this trait, although it is most prominent in N's eyes. Even those who do lack the shine have other features that make them seem alive. As I've stated earlier in this post, the shine in someone's eyes is a sign of life, it makes a person more animated and much more "human" in a way.N was raised by Ghetsis, a man who only saw him as a tool, and was only allowed to interact with Pokemon that had been abused by humans. On top of that, N was never allowed to set foot outside of his room. It's only natural that he would be lacking certain signs of humanity. So, in a way, Ghetsis was right when he said that N was "a freak without a human heart".However, as N traveled through Unova, met more people, and saw how people and Pokemon could work in harmony, he began to develop a human heart. He slowly realized that Ghetsis was wrong. When we see him again in Black 2 and White 2, he is all in favor of the player challenging the Pokemon league, the very same organization he had attempted to overthrow two years earlier.Overall, N's story is a marvelous example of character development. But let's return to what I said about the shine in his eyes, because I think that the lack of shine in his eyes was very much intentional character design. In the Pokemon Adventures/Special manga, N had spent the time between the events of the Black/White chapter and the Black 2/White 2 chapter training with Alder, Sage Gorm, Iris, Drayden, and Benga in the White Treehollow. He also had spent much of his time with Zekrom. He has had far more exposure to the outside world and has begun to understand those around him who believe that humans and Pokemon were meant to be. Thus, when we see him again, in the B2W2 chapter, he has a shine in his eyes. Then again, I don't know how canon the manga is, but I think it still reflects N's character arc very well. After all, the N from the manga has the same design as the N from the games, and was similarly lacking a shine in his eyes in the Black and White chapter. It's these little details that make Pokemon so great. I really hope story arcs like this will return in future generations, since it's definitely what make Generation V so enjoyable for me. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/3f2Y8lu
