"What if you could bring your avatar to newer games as a playable character?"
Hear me out. We already have the ability to transfer old Pokémon to newer games, which I know a lot of people love. You might hear someone say "I've had this Typhlosion for years, he's been my friend for so long! We've been through a lot together." It makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. The thing is, at the beginning of each main series game, you basically start from scratch. You're always a 10 year-old from a small town who gets their first Pokémon and goes on an adventure. I know a lot of players (myself included) would like to see some change in the formula (JelloApocalypse does an awesome job of re-imagining it in this video) but that's not my point here.Instead, I want to draw your attention to what you leave behind at the end of each game. Once you've completed the main story and the post game, your character has nowhere to go. Sure you can breed 'mons for competitive purposes and shiny hunt, but your avatar is abandoned as soon as you move on to the next game. It wasn't necessarily bad in older games where customization was limited or non-existent (since the main character is usually a blank slate for you to cast your personality on), but newer games basically gave you the freedom to embody the protagonist as you please. So, what if you could store your avatar, from say Sword and Shield in Pokémon Home, and play the next gen game as them? You could even bake it into the story! Choose to start the game as 10 year old newbie who wants to be the very best, or as the reigning champion of Galar, traveling to a new region in search of new challenges. You would get a drastically different story line, a different starting point in the region, and two unique perspectives on the game. The two characters could still interact from time to time throughout the story, and their relationship could be more complex than simple rivalry. You could even choose to be a good or evil character, and your counterpart would be the opposite! NPCs would also treat you differently, and wouldn't offer the same quests to a local kid as they would to an older, more experienced trainer from a distant land. The post-game even writes itself! You could replay the game as the character you didn't pick the first time, and get a totally different experience. (If you didn't buy Sword and Shield, you could still play the new game as Leon, or a Gloria with a more fleshed-out personality, instead of a custom character)I know that's a lot to ask, so I came with a backup plan. Say we don't get a fundamentally re-designed main series formula anytime soon. It doesn't seem too farfetch'd to think we could unlock our old avatar as a playable character once we've cleared the main story line in the new game. You could even design it to be an epic showdown, like when you get to battle Red at the end of Gold and Silver! Either way, you'd get the same satisfaction as when you bring your Typhlosion with you to a new region, and it would make things like collecting badges or meeting some of the series' recurring characters all the more meaningful.Anyway, I thought it was a cool idea and I hope I didn't make anyone sad by imagining a game they won't ever get to play. I'm also sure I'm not the first one to think of that, so feel free to comment your ideas as well. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/30HvgJw
