"We need a new pokemon game that deconstructs the series' tropes"
So the one thing that sword and shield really does right is build up the gym challenge as a nationwide event with tons of hype around it. The stadium fights, people chanting your name as your roam around through cities really accentuates the "importance" of the gym challenge. However, what pokemon games desperately need is a full deconstruction of the formula.A cool concept would be to start you, the MC, as the current champion. The game could start off with you losing to a super powerful trainer who takes your spot as champion. Then you, the disgraced ex champion, must start a new journey to rediscover yourself as a trainer. Instead of fighting gym challenges, you could be searching for other ex-leaders throughout the series, who are now "hermits" scattered across the land. These hermits have accrued experience throughout the years and have maybe become disallusioned from the competitive nature of the gym challenge, and throughout your journey they will impart on you wisdom so that you, the main character and ex-champion can rediscover why you wanted to be a trainer in the first place. Now a really cool idea, but one that i highly doubt will ever come to fruition, would be to give the player a choice on what kind of trainer you want to become. Maybe you want to be a competitive challenger, a peaceful breeder, a pokemon "first responder", or even a leader of a criminal organization. This would be a perfect time to implement a true open world pokemon game. One with real choices that impact your journey, with expansive open areas where each "hermit" resides.Basically what i would love from pokemon would be for the series to step back from the standard formula of "kid challenges gyms to take on the championship for the title", and make the player question himself on what kind of trainer they would like to be, if they had the choice. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/2GQydRG
