"Why was Black and White so different?"

So Black and white keep getting praised to the high heavens as a superior gen but what i don't know is why? NOt what makes it different but why was it ALLOWED to be so different? They had triple and rotation battles, a first gym leader that always countered you starter, a bit darker, mature story with, more rival arcs, the evil team. And then theres how they handled the legendary formula, and the gym leaders. The moment you're about to fight all the sages solo after running the elite 4 then the gym leaders come and back you up. . . i'm getting caught up again.
