"It makes more sense to save your single-use holiday incubators until after the event, right?"

#PokemonGO: TL;DR You'll get Gen 2 babies eventually, so save those free holiday incubators (and don't stress about collecting eggs during the holiday event) for an "increased chance" of hatching a Snorlax, Porygon, Lapras, Grimer, etc. Oh, and this event is still AWESOME!I was completely on board the holiday event enthusiasm train when I first saw the announcement — I was already trying to figure out how to schedule in some long walks after getting four or five of the "free" incubators so I could FINALLY get my first Gen 2 baby. But, as I was reading through the reactions to The Silph Road's post about the announcement, I ran across a sobering comment from someone stating he wasn't all that excited about the babies and he was going to hold onto his incubators until after the event. This instantly killed my event drunkenness and reminded me that I was of the exact same mindset before the announcement. I certainly want the Gen 2 babies eventually, but that will happen at some point just by continuing to hatch eggs normally — and it will be a fun surprise when it does! But, as far as actual game play, the Gen 2 babies aren't useful at all when it comes to gyms or even candy for additional evolutions. As a result, when that egg starts to crack and that Pokemon pops out, I would much rather see a Lapras or a Snorlax than a Magby or an Elekid. Or, to go with the more common 5k examples, I would rather hatch a Grimer or a Porygon than a Pichu or a Togepi. (Although the Togepi is debatable depending on whether or not Togetic will be catchable in the wild at some point — which I assume it will.)I will confess that with 2k eggs I would just as soon see a Cleffa or an Igglybuff as anything else, although I am still trying to hatch a 100% IV Magikarp so I can finally have a perfect Twister Gyarados to go with my others. So if I do get a 2k egg or two during the event I will be a little excited for potential baby-age.Back to my point… The way I look at it, if I hold on to as many of the holiday incubators as I can until after the event, then I will have an "increased chance" of hatching Porygon, Snorlax, Lapras, Grimer, etc. The only problem is that the Pokemon that will hatch is determined when you get the egg, right? So, that means that I will be motivated to collect less eggs during the event instead of more. You might think this conclusion would bum me out, especially given my former event drunkenness, but it actually gives me a completely different buzz because we get cool stuff without having to dedicate a lot of time to playing. In summary, the holiday event will result in 10 FREE SINGLE USE INCUBATORS just for spinning one Pokestop every day. That sounds awesome! Plus, the event motivates me to walk a little less, which means I don't have to try to squeeze in lots of "Go time" around Christmas.PLUS, the one-hour lures are all good too — especially since it is being speculated by most that we will be receiving lures as a gift on Christmas morning given the addition of gift box sprites in the code recently. I look forward to traveling to my favorite four-stop spot (which is located outside of a coffee shop) and grabbing a hot cup of coffee — and then I'll just sip and sit and spin! Normally I feel guilty if I'm not walking, but now I can tell myself that every step I take just means that much less of a chance of finally hatching a decent Lapras.Oh, and the increased spawns of starter Pokes might have been a huge MEH moment for me except for the fact that the one Pokemon I have left to complete my North American Pokedex is Charizard! I've been putting off visiting the rotating Charmander nests in my area, and my procrastination has been rewarded. Is there anything sweeter than being rewarded for putting something off? What a great Christmas present! So my 98% Charmeleon better take some Tums or whatever because he is about to gorge on candy. So yes, I have managed to get myself holiday event drunk again! And perhaps my favorite takeaway from this "overthinking it" thought train ride I'm currently on is that Niantic has (inadvertently I assume) created the perfect event that rewards both casual and serious players. Casual players get free incubators and an increased chance of catching all those adorable brand new baby Pokes, while serious players can use the event to better their long-term game. Also, "serious" players can opt to go for dem babies while "casual" players can opt to focus on their long-term game — or both can do both![NOTE: There is a potentially huge buzzkill if Niantic has somehow worked it where you don't get a new incubator until you've used up the previous one. However, that sounds really complicated from a programming standpoint. Plus, I don't think Niantic would even have a motivation to do that would they?] via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2hA4UkI
