"[Meta] Trick for gaining more distance from running and biking (of course with a disadvantage)."
#PokemonGO: Tl;dr: You can travel at any speed and gain distance by leaving PoGo app in the background, stoping at the correct spot, wait a certain amount of time and bring it back to the foreground. I have posted this several times in comments, where people complain about gaining much less distance than they where traveling by running or biking. I found this tip in a comment, but I cannot find it anymore. So, sadly I cannot give credit. But I read complaints about it quite often and since I tested the method several times, I wanted to process it with a post. So here it goes:First you have to know 3 things:Speedlimit for buddy and eggs is 6.5mph / 10.5kmh which is 175m/minAndroid closes apps in the background after 8 minutesPoGo "assumes" you are NOT traveling too fast, when it is in the backgroundI think with those three hints, you already know where this one goes. So let´s go on and do the magic:PoGo cannot get your position and speed when it is in the background, but when you minimize and reopen it, it calculates the average speed you had between minimizing and reopening. So you can travel at ANY speed you want, when the app is in the background. Let´s take this knowledge and take gained distance to the max:We know maximum speed is 175m/min and apps in the background are closed by android after 8 minutes. So to be on the save side we calculate the maximum distance we can gain in 7 minutes, which is:175m/min x 7min = 1225m Unfortunately I don´t know if the 8 minutes are really a fixed value and if this works on iOS, too. Maybe you have to test it on your device first.Knowing this you now need to plan your trip before leaving the house. So open Google Maps, best on PC or laptop, because we need to measure some distances. Right click on your starting point and select "measure distance". Now if you left click and hold, a line will appear from your starting point to the mouse pointer. Drag in the direction you are going to travel and find a point on your way that is NOT farer away than 1,200 meters. Maybe you want to chose a bench or a spot with many Pokestops or whatever you like. Take that distance and divide it by 175m/min. Let´s say it is bench with some spawns and a Pokestop that is 1000 meters away from your starting point:1000m / 175m/min = 5.7min Now you can go on and repeat these steps till you reach your destination. When you are finished calculating the times and distances you can go on your trip. Open PoGo app at your start point and let it fully initialize. Then minimize it and start a counter with your found time. Maybe round it up to be on the save side again and enter 6 minutes in our example. Now you can travel at any speed you want to the desired spot. Keep in mind: the phone has to stay active all the time. If it goes to standby, PoGo will be terminated. The app needs to stay running in the background. If you reach your desired spot before the timer hits 0, stop there. When your timer runs out, reopen PoGo. Now you can watch the magic on the screen. You might see yourself still standing at the starting point and then "jumping" to your actual position. You might have seen this several times before, but this time you will see the circle on your buddy making a huge jump. This short moment is so satisfying. You have to try it out yourself and report if it works for you or if I missed something and we can give some further tips to other players.Like most good things in life, this method has a bad side: Of course you are not able to interact with the game when you travel with this method. To work around this a bit, maybe you want to choose parts of your way for gaining distance that have the lowest or no spawns and stops.Happy hatching!Edit: Maybe we can get some reports, if this also works on iOS. /u/TaterTotsAreGood says at least it worked "by accident".Edit2: Other players report that they are already using this method, so we can say it is confirmed that it is working.Edit3: /u/Dingsign reports that he got 9 minutes on S7 Edge. Lets see how far we can go. Keep reporting! I'll try to keep summarizing the interesting facts here.Edit4: Some players are reporting that their phones cannot keep PoGo active in the background. Seems to relate to memory size. I have 2GB and can open maybe one additional small app. For example WhattsApp sometimes works, sometimes it results in closing PoGo.Edit5: /u/Estake confirmed it is working on iOS, so go for a try. I can test it next week on iPhone 7.A suggestion for those where the app cannot be held active in the background: Try locking the phone while PoGo is in the foreground. You will have to set a timer on another device or watch. When you unlock your phone it might still be active and jump to your actual position giving you the distance you traveled.Edit6: Great report from /u/Ntdark came in.In my ip7 on 10.2 (No jb) the app stays in the background running indefinetely! Don't know how many apps you can keep in the background without the ios killing pogo. I had cleaned my background apps before starting pogo. I put my phone to my pocket and started listening music. After about 20 mins walking(I know i didn't pass the speed limit but I have no bike to test the theory!) the app was still running smoothly and 2 of my eggs had hatched!! via /r/pokemongo http://ift.tt/2lz66cV
