"Gen 3 noob - any info appreciated!"

#PokemonGO: Seeing as the latest updates feature more and more background gen 3 code, I'd like to prepare as best I can for when it eventually drops. I'm only familiar with the first two generations of Pokemon from my childhood playing the games and watching the cartoon, so have literally no idea on who the big players are in gen 3. Any help and info would be super! Are there any dragonite/tyranitar equivalents? Who's the pidgey/sentret of the generation?
