"Lance uses more dragon Pokémon than you think"
People have been pointing out since the start how inaccurate Lances teams are, given that he is supposedly a dragon trainer, while using a plethora of PKMN that are not of the Dragon type, like Gyarados, Aerodactyl, Charizard...Of course the obvious reason for this is the lack of Dragon type PKMN back in the first generations. But the thing is, in the games where this is the case, he never actually calls himself a Dragon-TYPE trainer, just a dragon trainer."Well gee, what's the difference" I hear you say.The difference is that there is 2 categorizations in Pokémon that include "dragon", the Dragon-type and the dragon egg-group.The former is an elemental type, the latter is a biological distinction that determines breeding compatibility. Not all dragons have to necessarily be Dragon types.(there can easily be 2 other elemental types that are more prominent)And not all Dragon-types necessarily have to be actual dragon-like creatures(theoretically, there could be a cat Pokémon that had its primary type be the Dragon-type for example. It wouldn't be an actual dragon, but it would be well skilled using Dragon-type moves and have weaknesses/strengths that Dragon-types have.. one existing example of a non-dragon Dragon-type PKMN so far would be Alolan Exeggutor)Pokémon like Charizard, Gyarados and Seadra, while not being Dragon-types are all in the dragon egg-group, and therefore actual dragon Pokémon. Here's an overview of final stages of all currently existing PKMN in the dragon egg-group:https://www.deviantart.com/saiph-charon/art/Dragon-Pokemon-779706072So it could be that this is a case similar to how some trainer classes exclusively use PKMN of a certain egg-group, like the Poke Maniac class using PKMN in the Monster group, or Fishermen limiting themselves to actual fish PKMN, not to Water types. They would gladly use fish that aren't Water types... if there was a noteworthy amount of those to choose from.In other obvious cases (like Bug Catchers and Bird Keepers), the overlap between a type and egg-group built around a similar concept is at the moment close to 100%, hence why this goes mostly unnoticed.Of course with Aerodactyl not being a Dragon type or in the dragon egg-group, it still pokes a hole in my point, but I like bringing up the distinction between elemental types and egg groups, because it's an often overlooked detail in Pokémon. via /r/pokemon http://bit.ly/2BZNXf7
