"Why, imo, Clamperl day was much better than the Feebas Fiasco [Long post inside]"

#PokemonGO: Hello everyone!I really really enjoyed the last event we had, while i really hated the Feebas one and i said why in multiple occasions inside my community, but i feel like i haven't seen a proper post about it on TSR, so here is my (very personal) analysis.First of all, i ask for forgiveness if my english is not perfect, is not my main language and i (unfortunately) still do a lot of mistakes. Sorry!Let's start from the beginning then. The Feebas day (or Feebas Fiasco, as i'd like to call it, FF for short) was a mess. As an european player i also saw reduced shiny rates compared to the rest of the world and that made all of us even angrier, if it was possible.SpawnsThe main point that most people enjoyed, i believe, were the extra spawn outside the researches. During the FF we didn't have anything exciting to actually catch outside the very usual spawn. It made the whole event about doing the special research, of course, but with nothing else on top.Clamperl day, instead, gave us a lot to hunt for. I've seen a lot of Krabbys, Psyducks, starter in general and a lot of evolved pokemon. The shiny checks and the candies you could get around for uncommon pokemon, plus the extra stardust from evolved pokemon (seriously, i didnt even think that Prinplup could spawn in the wild) gave us a big incentive in actually playing around. That was a very welcomed feature of the event, where everyone where just expecting more luvdisc after the St. Valentine event, they surprised with nice spawns. I've even caught a Lapras and iv'e seen a poliwrath on my radar. Someone in my community got a Shiny feebas as well (much better than the FF day instead). Wow! Defo much better than Starlys and Rattatas.Quest VarietyWhat i personally really enjoyed was the quest variety we had access to and what kind of quest we had. Lets compare the quest from FF to the Clamperl day.Feebas day QuestsClamperl day QuestsEarn 1 Buddy candyMake 5 Nice ThrowsHatch 1 eggMake 3 Nice Throws in a rowMake 10 Great ThrowsMake 3 Great ThrowsMake 15 Nice ThrowsMake 2 Great Throws in a row-Make 5 Curveball Throws-Catch 5 Water Type pokemon-Catch a Magikarp or a Wailmer-Catch a Psyduck or Krabby-Battle in a gym-Use a Super Effective Charged Attack In a Gym battle-Battle in a Raid-Spin 2 Pokestops-Use 3 Berries to help catch a pokemon-Evolve 2 Water type pokemonOk, we dont need to compare the amount of quests as Clamperl Day gave us 14 different quests compared to the 4 we had on the FF. Yes, apparently some were buggy and got removed from Niantic (someone was complaining about the quest being removed. Would have you preferred them to do nothing and let us playing with a buggy feature during a funny event?), but at least they tried. Its clear the the FF was more like a test for this feature to see how it was working and how we would react to it.Plus, the quest of a choice were qualitatively better. Doing a very time limited event and have to walk a lot for eggs/buddies just to have a (very low) chance of getting a shiny is terrible idea, especially if you want to do a lot of quests like we were supposed to.The "Throws quest" were also terrible, as they were definetly too long and yes, i'd say hard for the casual player. I am quite decent at throwing balls on rattatas, but seeing my girlfriend who plays the game much more casually then me struggling to get 10 great throws just to get another normal feebas was a terrible experience for the both of us. 15 nice throws requires at least, well, id say around 12-13 encounters of low level common pokemon, so it requires to be a lot more grindy than wanted. The quests inside the Clamperl day, instead, were easier and with a lot more diversity. Getting 3 Great Throws on big target like Wailmer, or with hardest catch like Wartortle was much easier than during the FF. The quests "catch a specific pokemon" were super easy due to that mons literally flooding the spawns around. Sure, they tried to monetize it putting a "battle in a raid" quests, but they were the minority (by being 1 quest out of 14). Also, they nested inside a limited time event Latias with a shiny chance, so not too bad. And still, they went for the easy route of "battle 1 raid" and not "win 1 raid", so even more casual and rural players could use their daily pass on a Tier 5 raid and leaving as soon as possible to get the quest rewards. And it's not like the good old "hatch an egg" is not asking the players to buy incubators to do the quests quickly. The quests, were, imo, the major improvement overall.Shiny ratesFirst of all, we have to understand why and how we got those shinies and why those rates. When we had FF, we had the shiny chance just because we already had Feebas, so why we should go play a limited time and very boring event for a pokemon we already have? Let's throw a shiny in it (and i'd say a beautiful one, Milotic was probably one of the shiny the community like the most) and let's see what happens. And they were low, and they knew it as soon as they doubled them for America an Asia. That is a good thing, they realized the mistake and quickly corrected it, even if it was a terrible idea from the beginning. And no, as an european player im not mad other people got better rates, im mad about.. well everything else. Im only glad they got better rates as niantic "fixed" it.On the other hand, i believe the rates for clamperl were too high, compared the amount of shinies ive seen around, i would say the rates were about 1/15ish. Sure, they give us chances this high as the evolutions are random and people obviously want both of them to fill their dex, plus some avaiable to trade to whoever couldnt do the event. Ill take those rates everyday for this kind of event. But also, the event was supposed to give us some dex fillers. Clamperl and evolutions are nowhere near usefull in any role (as far as i know) and their function was only to fill our dex. I was happy to play the event even without knowing they could have been shiny because my dex is important. This is a major point over the FF, in my opinion. If you go attend a grindy event for 3 hours and you get literally nothing out of it, it's frustrating. In this case, instead, we all got 3 new dex fillers, even the most unlucky of us that didnt get shinies.I wouldnt mind if more new pokemon are released in this way, as we also know they are not locked behind events as we've seen report of them spawning in the wild already.Type of event analysisThis analysis regards the type of event and not the FF or the Clamperl day in particular. I do, personally, enjoy them a lot. They feel like you actually do something, instead of community days where you mostly just walk around hoping to get nice ivs and shines. Yes, i do like community days as well, but i can enjoy both give my comment about it.This is Niantic trying to do something different than what we had for the past year, and changes are always welcomed if they can refresh our interest in the game. Of course they need to tune out things before they are perfect, and i also think they still need to polish out the community day system. What i do not like is the really short notice we had. The FF was a bit better, they announced it on the 10th of January while the event was on the 19th. That is more than a week notice, it is decent. Not great, but ok. With Clamperl, instead, they announced it on the 19th of February for the 23rd.Let's be honest, there are 2 kind of players, Adults and Kids. The majority is Adults (age 20+) and a vast minority is kids (and im including actual kids aged <10). If i was a kid, i couldnt ask my dad/mom to just bring me outside for 3 hours on a saturday morning with no advice. And as a working adult i can not just skip work. Yes, there is people who work during weekends and while i personally mostly dont work mornings, i work on shifts and i dont know if i am avaiablle during weekends. When they announce the CDs with weeks in advance, i can mostly just book them off and play the event (also because i am lucky with my working crew), while i just cant do it with... well less than a week notice. I do not enjoy the events always being in the weekends, but i understand that majority of players are technically free in the weekends, so i live with it. But 4 days notice for a major event is not acceptable in a game mostly played by people aged 25+.Also its important to remind that with the event being by quest only, we were basically given high IV pokemon all the time. That is very different from CD, were it sucks that your high level-super cool- legacy move Dragonite is a 0/3/2 IVs. Sure, high IVs dont matter that much but still, they are a nice thing to collect, especially on time limited pokemon. The rural questionYes, again, im quite lucky i live in a fairly dense area for pokemon go events. We have an incredible community of both pokemon go players and Ingress players, we have loads of pokestops, gyms, spawns. That is not the same for a rural player. The game needs to come to term with thus kind of players and i believe the higher shiny rates and the easier quests really helped. I guess is much easier even for rural player to do 3 great throws instead of 10. And also, it would have been less common for them to be stuck with the same quests all day because there are only like 5 quests avaiable and you have 10 pokestops in town. So yes, good job on increasing the rates but this kind of events are not nice for rural players and this is something that would need to be addressed somehow. Clearly, pokestop submissions would help a lot. Also, someone in my community made me notice something. Rural players can (obviously) moves to more dense area and have fun during the event. This is not something you can do without an appropriate time of planning. Again, the notice was defo too short. What we can expect in the foreseeable futureI do really like the last update about the next CD being rolled out by timezones. Yes, the time is imo a bit off but i believe someone said it would clip on top of Ingress events maybe. I dont know, it's a shot in the dark for me. I do not like events being so early in the morning, but an event ending at 6 is definetly too late. Some places get dark after a certain time and rural players will not have fun playing mostly lonely on dark streets. I know, again, this is just a test and they will try different hours (i hope so), starting with Treecko that is a not meta relevant pokemon, so trainer will not be too mad if the event is messed up. Again, rural players can move, but not everyone can move at that time of the night.Plus, people like me are probably gonna work if they get an event with 3 days notice in the weekend at that time. I very much believe the notice time is the key element of how successuful an event can or can not be. Give me at least 1 week notice, 2 better, and i will be happy. And most player will be.TL DRPro of the clamperl day:Better spawnsDecent Shiny ratesEvent with "new" pokemon, even if just dex fillersMuch better quests and quest diversityConNot enough time in advance given to the playersType of event not too keen on rural playersThat's a wrap!I hope im not forgetting anything of what i wanted to say an i also hope my english is decent enough. I want to make clear that this is not some kind of complain or whatever, but just an analysis of the recent events. Also, it's quite late here and i did not proofread this, so again, im sorry for any spelling mistake! via /r/TheSilphRoad https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/auehz4/why_imo_clamperl_day_was_much_better_than_the/?utm_source=ifttt
