"Is Psystrike Mewtwo worth powering up? An analysis of its use in the raid meta."

#PokemonGO: I have seen a lot of discussion around how useful Psystrike Mewtwo is since its introduction. I have also been thinking about how many to catch and power up for my team. I believe it is very useful. It plays a lot of different roles. However, I would still make the recommendation not to power up more than a few (one or two) beyond the catch level (20 or better yet 25 if boosted). Here’s some reasons why:1- I know people only look for the legendary raids to determine usefulness. Mewtwo will likely find more usage in the lower tier raids. The top use for Psychic Mewtwo so far has been level 3 Machamp raids. For this specific purpose, PS Mewtwo is very useful at level 20. You can easily solo Machamp with a team of 6 freshly caught Mewtwo. You will be able to solo Conkledurr if it is ever introduced into 3 star raids. You will also be able to duo a 4 star conkledurr boss with the same team. That is to say, where Mewtwo is useful and you’re not looking to do some super short man 4 * raid, at level 20-25, PS Mewtwo is still a top option for your team. In Pokegenie simulations, at level 20 it is outdoing some of my other Psychics at much higher level (Psychic Mewtwo, Alakazam, and Espeon). For Machamp raids, Pokebattler shows it has an estimator of .69 at level 20, that’s higher than level 35 alakazam or Espeon (https://ift.tt/34XVzwj). So powering up a lot of PS Mewtwo for this purpose makes little sense.2- For legendary bosses where Mewtwo is the top counter, there are other counters that you likely already have at a high level. I’ll take Terrakion as an example. Mewtwo is by far the top counter here. It can easily duo at level 30. At level 20, you can easily trio. With Metagross, Machamp/fighting types, and water/grass types you can easily trio and fill your team with level 20 PS Mewtwos. I would only recommend powering up a full team to level 30 if a person is trying to duo Terrakion. I wouldn’t go beyond 30 because a solo is not possible even in windy weather. For the other upcoming fighting bosses you have better options than Mewtwo. It’s only in future generations that we can see Mewtwo becoming useful against a couple of ultra beasts. One of them is doubly weak to ground attacks. We also have no idea how ultra beasts will be handled. So I’d hold on on preparing for those bosses just yet.3- As a generalist, Mewtwo is the top choice by far. Psychic is also great for neutral damage, it is only doubly resisted by Dark types and single resisted by Psychic and Steel types. Even though generalists are not all that useful, they still work in places where SE counters are lacking. You can see PS Mewtwo pop up as a really good counter to Electrics. It is a top counter to Raikou, ranking 6th-7th place even against Shadowball (https://ift.tt/2M3I6uq). There’s a bit of margin though compared to the top two, and Excadrill is somewhat easy to obtain in the wild at high levels. Common ground types like Groudon, and Mamoswine still outperform it. So it might be worth it to use one or two as generalist fillers but there’s always better options in those situations.[Edit: thanks to users u/amphibiansanity and u/rtyrty100. In the event of windy weather PS Mewtwo becomes the top counter for Raikou and Groudon and climb up for others like second top for Kyogre. This will likely not be the case when strong ground attackers (Landorus), Kyogre with a better move, and electric (Zekrom) are introduced. So if windy weather is common where you live, PS Mewtwo as a generalist becomes really useful. See Raikou in windy weather here: https://ift.tt/34TOBIV ].4- Coverage Mewtwo with TB, SB, IB, or FT are still more useful than PS if they deal SE damage. Don’t go discarding your old Mewtwos yet (maybe only the Psychic ones). Coverage Mewtwo are still very useful against opponents weak to their charge attacks. In case you’re looking to counter a specific boss that’s weak to one of M2’s coverage attacks, I’d put some candy towards one of those Mewtwos instead. To go back to my recommendation, powering up a couple of PS Mewtwo will be really useful for Pokémon weak to psychic and as a generalist to fill your team and deal huge neutral damage where you lack counters. It also still works as a coverage option with SB, TB, or IB so those Mewtwos are still worthy investments. However, it would be really hard to justify a full team of powered up PS Mewtwos for any future legendary or lower tier raids. via /r/TheSilphRoad https://ift.tt/2V3mZwe
