It feels like they know exactly what they're doing and they don't care how obvious it is. Force people to pay for a new service so they can shut down the old one making it impossible to get pokemon from gens 3-5 into newer games and cut pokemon so people have to pay for the service repeatedly or risk losing their Pokemon or them getting stuck.
