"Gen 6 did a lot of great things for the series. Gen 7 walked back a lot of them."

Fair warning, Generation 6 is my favorite in the series so this is coming from a biased place. But I feel like some of the best features of the pokemon series were introduced in XY/ORAS.The fairy type was introduced which is awesome. Mega evolutions are still my favorite innovation they've ever done. Old favorites that just couldn't hang in competitive (Mawhile, Beedrill, kangaskhan) were injected with new life. We got a new evveelution to go with that new type. Character customization was introduced for the 1st time in a mainline game. Super training was a fantastic addition that let you easily track EVs and train up your in game team. I will admit the soccer game was a bit hokey but it could've been worse. The soaring mechanic from ORAS was an awesome way to get around the region. Contests are back, and they even found a way to integrate mega evolutions. And most importantly, the pss was pretty much perfect. The wonder trading, acquaintance/friend system, everything about it was the best in the series thus far. Then Gen 7 came along. Mega evolutions are still around, but only accessible after you beat the game, and there are no new ones. There IS a new mechanic with the Alola forms, which I like in theory, not in practice. The problem with alola forms is they are state redistributions, not additions like mega evolutions. No matter how.you shuffle stats around; raticate still wont be very good without a boost that a mega could've provided.Super training is gone, replaced by the jellybean islands. This really irked me. In ORAS, you get access to super training from the time you meet Wally in Petalburg before the 1st gym. It takes an hour at most yo max out a pokemon in super training. You have to unlock multiple Islands to get the EV training island in Sun and Moon, and it takes something like 12 hours to max out 1 pokemon. This is nothing short of a massive leap backwards fo no reason. The biggest negative is the replacement of the gen 6 bottom screen with Fesitval plaza. It took all of the streamlined simplicity of the PSS and replaced it with bouncy castles and other needles clutter. I had to google how to trade with a friend in Moon because the menus were so weird. This really felt like change for the sake of change to me, because nothing was wrong with the gen 6 system.Overall, SuMo aren't bad games, I love the reigon, I love that they changed up the gym formula. But they could've been my favorites in the series had they run with what gen 6 set up instead of back tracking. End rant. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/2yNZeBD
