"So level 38 is the end of the game, why bother with 39-40?"

#PokemonGO: Am I forgetting something or is there anything new to look forward to at 40? Or even 39? Me and a friend just hit 38 (totally legit) and went to upgrade our main team mons up and found out one upgrade into the trainer level 38 cap the power up button just disappears, so the actual Pokemon level cap is 39?Or is it just one upgrade per level now? The disappearing button kind of means to me we are at the end.But the main point of this post is this: why bother levelling anymore? It would seem to me that lucky eggs are no longer necessary as the next two levels do not reward a player with anything worthwhile. No more upgrades, no new items, nothing of any note.
