"Did You Know Tauros Dominated Pokemon's First VGC-style Competitive Format?"

If you've heard anything about Tauros in competitive Pokemon, you probably know that it dominated Generation 1 play. The Hyper Beam Glitch (no recharge turn if it KOs), Normal being an amazing offensive type, and Tauros being really fast made it the best Pokemon not named Mew or Mewtwo. But that's basically all you'll hear about it, even though it actually saw a massive comeback when The Pokemon Company first tried out VGC formats like the ones used today. These tournaments were played on the Gamecube titles back in 2004 and 2005. They used rules from the Orre Colosseum Battle Facility which are really similar to current VGC (Bring 6~Pick 4, Item Clause, etc), but with a few tweaks that most associate with Smogon like Sleep Clause.People who still play this format (including myself) regard Tauros as a Top-6 Pokemon, and old tournament records show that players back then thought the same as it's all over Top-Cuts from the various tournaments held. The introduction of Choice Band and being given Intimidate as an ability basically caused a second Tauros renaissance after its Gen 1 glory days, before fighting types got buffed a bunch in Gen 4 and Tauros lost all its competitive relevancy up until it got its Paldea forms nearly 20 years later. If you'd like to learn more about Tauros' weird competitive history, I made a video on it: https://youtu.be/UtkX\_POEPr8 via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/jtDzb59
