"Gen 2: The Pokemon who exist for the lols"

#PokemonGO: Hello travellers! :) I believe at this point everyone here is probably bored of all the discussion about who's the strongest Pokemon / defender / attacker etc... As someone who started loving the Pokemon franchise by playing Gen 2 games, I thought it will be a good change to educate our travellers about 17 interesting Pokemon in Gen 2 that are actually quite special, yet so weak that you'll probably just ignore them later. But at least by reading this, I hope you may at least appreciate the interesting facts behind them (and show them some love). Ok, let's start! 185 SudowoodoWhat is it: a tree (made of rock)Max CP: 2065Story: Sudowoodo first appeared in the games as a tree which blocked your path in the games (similar to the Snorlax story), and in order to get past (and catch) it, you had to get a squirt bottle and sprinkle it with water. What's special about it: Sudowoodo although it looks like a tree, it is rock type, and the only single rock type Pokemon you may find at this point. In fact is well known for its signature move mimic (not found in the data mine if I remember correctly), which would basically reuse the exact same move the opponent has used. This also tell us something: it may not be actually a tree, it just mimics a tree!In PoGo?: I guess it might be as rare as a Snorlax, but end up not as useful in gyms. In fact it would be cool if they started to make trees appear on the map, and let us discover one by constantly clicking on random trees... :P 187 HoppipWhat is it: a floating cat-like creature which is actually a seed.Max CP: 508 (1553 when fully evolved to Jumpluff)What's special about it: Hoppip has the highest catch rate among all Gen 2 Pokemon, so it may look like an Oddish counterpart (it evolves two times too), but they are a lot weaker in stats. Although it is Grass/Flying type, it couldn't learn a single flying type move at least until Gen 4 came about. Also, it is the second Pokemon that actually could learn splash, the ultimate most useless move in the games! 190 AipomWhat is it: A monkey with a hand as its tailMax CP: 1188What's special about it: Aipom does not evolve into any other Pokemon (until Gen 4), and when compared to all evolved form in Gen 2, it has the lowest CP of them all (excluding all the weird Pokemon who can't learn any other moves). It is something like a Farfetch'D, possibly rare or regional, but utterly useless in battle. 191 SunkernWhat is it: a partially-germinated sunflower seedMax CP: 316 (2048 when evolved to Sunflora)What's special about it: In the main games, Sunkern has the lowest base stat of all Pokemon (across all 7 generations, no kidding!). It is understandable since it is just a sunflower seed... One may expect that it may evolve into a beast like Magikarp, but no, it just evolves into a normal, smiling sunflower. In PoGo?: Since we've found that sun stones exist in PoGo, I guess it would evolve using the same mechanics as how Gloom evolves into Bellossom too? 198 MurkrowWhat is it: a crow which wears a witch hatMax CP: 1392What's special about it: Murkrow does not evolve into any other Pokemon (until Gen 4), and it has the lowest defense stat among all fully evolved Gen 2 Pokemon. It has an interesting Dark/Flying typing, and it has quite a high attack stat though, but well, it is so fragile that it may not last long in battle anyway... 200 MisdreavusWhat is it: A GHOSTMax CP: 1781What's special about it: Misdreavus is famous for two reasons: (1) At this point it is the only single-type Ghost Pokemon (not weak against psychic type moves), and (2) it has two signature moves (moves that no one else could learn by levelling up) when introduced: pain split and psywave. Pain split basically adds up the user and the opponent's HP, and divides equally, great to use when almost dying; while psywave is a damaging move which power turns out randomly either as half or 1.5 times the user's level. In PoGo?: I did not see psywave nor pain split in the data mine, so maybe it would just have generic ghost type moves? 201 UnownWhat is it: A list of alphabets with eyesMax CP: 1022Story: In the game, Unown was first encountered at the Ruins of Alph, it is along the route to the second gym. Several scientists are studying these ruins, and there are four chambers there. When you go in to any of them, and when you complete a puzzle on the wall (a Pokemon jigsaw puzzle), the floor will crumble and you will fall into a lower level, which you may meet and catch Unown (at level 5). Solving each chamber will give you a certain set of Unown shapes to appear in the lower floor, they originally have only 26 shapes (alphabets A to Z), but later on in Gen 3 we saw an addition of the symbols ! and ?.What's special about it: Unown has 28 sprites, the most sprites among all known Pokemon, it is also famous for only knowing one single move: Hidden Power. Hidden Power is an interesting move, its type and power depends on the Pokemon's IV, that means that one Unown may have a powerful bug type attack, or the other may have a weak dragon attack! Despite this very interesting property, it has the 4th lowest max CP among all Gen 2 Pokemon, so it may not be useful in gyms...In PoGo?: The data mine has shown the Unown medal, which confirms the ability to catch and collect Unowns of all different type forms. However, I did not see the move Hidden Power in the data mine yet, so I speculate that it would not be rolled out with the first wave of the Gen 2 Pokemon, but instead be released later (when everyone is bored of catching Gen 2 Pokemon! :P). 202 WobbuffetWhat is it: A punching bag with squinted eyes, a big mouth, hands and a black tail with eyesMax CP: 1024What's special about it: Wobba wobba! Wobbuffet is one of those Pokemon who can't learn any moves on its own, but it has a set of 4 moves it knows in the game which makes it unique. Similar to a punching bag, it can't actually attack someone on its own, but it could 'hit back' double on a Pokemon using the moves counter (on physical attacks) and mirror coat (a special attack). Wobbuffet also knows safeguard, which could prevent itself from getting frozen, burnt or etc, and it also knows destiny bond, in which if it faints, the opponent will faint as well. Wobbuffet in later generations also knows an ability shadow tag, which makes other Pokemon not able to run away from it! To make things even more interesting, it has one of the highest HP among Gen 2 Pokemon, making it quite long lasting in battle. This is one magical (and creepy) punching bag, seriously! :P Try imagine two Wobbuffet fighting each other, that would be one hell of a party...In PoGo?: The fact that counter and mirror coat has been present in the data mine suggests that it may be rolled out together with other Gen 2 Pokemon. It would be interesting to look forward how these two moves would turn out, however due to its low CP, how useful will it be? 207 GligarWhat is it: A pink batman-like flying scorpion with a big tongueMax CP: 1758What's special about it: Gligar does not evolve into any other Pokemon (until Gen 4), and at this point it would be a very average Pokemon. It has an interesting Ground/Flying type, but until much later generations, it wasn't able to learn any ground or flying type moves. So I believe it may end up being the new Goldeen, nice to look at yet no useful moves. 213 ShuckleWhat is it: a turtle-like rock bugMax CP: 300What's special about it: Shuckle is the ultimate extreme of a Pokemon. Among all Pokemon, it has the lowest stamina and CP, however it has the highest defense (yes, exceeding all known steel types and huge boulders), that is one rock-hard bug! Its defense is so high that you usually need two hydro pumps to defeat it. It used to be a very useless Pokemon back in Gen 2 because it can't make any proper damage to anyone (accept bide, which it allow the opponent to attack it a few turns then it suddenly unleashes double the attack back to it), but in later generations it has moves like power trick (which could swap its attack and defense to make it super fragile yet highly offensive) and power split (which evens up its attack and defense) to help it survive. In PoGo?: it's CP is just way too low for any practical purposes. Its defense may be high, but with such low HP, it is not invincible. It would probably do negligible damage on any Pokemon... 215 SneaselWhat is it: some demon-looking creature which has a red earMax CP: 1868What's special about it: Sneasel does not evolve into any other Pokemon (until Gen 4), and it is the only Dark/Ice type you will find. In the main games it has the highest speed of all pre-fully-evolved Pokemon. Sneasel's signature move is beat up, which allows each other Pokemon the user has to come out one-by-one to attack the opponent, make it something like a gangsta move.In PoGo?: Sneasel is kinda average, since speed is not used in PoGo, it does not really matter if it was fast or not. Also, beat up is not found in the data mine (and hard to implement anyway), so maybe Sneasel will just have some generic ice or dark type moves. 219 MagcargoWhat is it: a snail made of lavaMax CP: 1543What's special about it: Magcargo is the evolved form of Slugma, and it is the only Fire/Rock type you would find in the while. You may think that fire types couldn't be that bad... But no, Magcargo is ultimately the weakest fire type you can ever find, across all generations! Well it sucks to be a snail on fire who has to carry a rock-made shell anyway... :P 220 SwinubWhat is it: a sleepy-looking ice pigMax CP: 668 (2284 when evolved into Piloswine)What's special about it: Swinub and its evolution family are the only Ice/Ground types you would find among all generations. Swinub is actually known as the weakest ice-type Pokemon, but all hope is not lost: it would evolve into Piloswine, which is somewhat powerful. But the best is yet to come: later in Gen 4 it would evolve again, and it would turn into a beast! 224 OctilleryWhat is it: a red octopusMax CP: 2124What's special about it: Okay, maybe Octillery isn't all that bad, it seems quite powerful. But I want to talk about it because it evolves from a Remoraid: a freaking FISH!! In the main games Octillery has a signature move called Octazooka, just seeing the name of the move makes you thnk that its kinda cool! But...In PoGo?: ... Octazooka is not found in the data mine. :( 225 DelibirdWhat is it: Santa Claus' delivery bird, holding a white bagMax CP: 937What's special about it: Delibird has the lowest stamina after Shuckle, and it has the third lowest max CP among all evolved Gen 2 Pokemon. What makes Delibird special is the move Present, which it would throw a bag to the opponent, in which once open, would either be bombs (of different magnitudes), or it would heal one quarter of the opponents HP (the 'nice guy' Pokemon). Even though Present is the only move it learns while levelling up (not the case after Gen 3), it could still learn other useful flying or ice type moves by using TMs, which makes it the only Pokemon which self learns less than 3 4 moves who could learn TMs.In PoGo?: Present is not found in the data mine, so I guess you won't find the joy of restoring your opponent's HP in a gym. But it's CP is just too low to make any difference. Do you think Delibird would only appear as a special during Christmas? 235 SmeargleWhat is it: An artistic dog which paints with its tail (not to be confused with Smeagol)Max CP: 389What's special about it: Smeargle has the lowest attack stat and second lowest max CP of all Gen 2 Pokemon, but what makes it special? The only move it knows is called Sketch: when it uses this move, it would learn any move the next Pokemon uses on him. In the main games it would learn sketch 10 times, allowing it to learn 10 different moves from others. Technically, this means that Smeargle can learn any move under the sun! But...In PoGo?: ... sketch is still not found in the data mine yet, so I guess he may appear later than other Gen 2 Pokemon. Besides, we really do not know how would sketch turn out, and due to its low max CP, not sure if it would even survive a hit before it learns anything... :P 236 TyrogueWhat is it: a humanoid Pokemon with baggy pants and three horns on its headMax CP: 404 (1905 when evolved to Hitmontop)What's special about it: You would probably have heard of the hype for Tyrogue earlier on... he's the only baby Pokemon that has not appeared in PoGo yet, and is the only baby Pokemon with a branched evolution. In the main games, is able to evolve into Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan or Hitmontop depending on whether it has its attack higher, lower or equal to its defense stat. It may seem fun to evolve it but Tyrogue only knows the move tackle (more moves in later generations), so levelling it up used to be quite difficult without TMs. Tyrogue has the lowest base stats of all fighting Pokemon, but this is expected since it is a... baby...In PoGo?: Why hasn't Tyrogue appeared together with other babies? maybe Niantic just hasn't sort out how to implement the candies for the Hitmons. Either they change the candies to 'Hitmon' or 'Tyrogue' candies, or they come out with different ideas. Hopefully Tyrogue would make the Hitmons appear more common than before! xxxxxxxxxx Thanks for reading! If you enjoy reading this, I may do another post comparing the Gen1 vs Gen2 counterparts. :) via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2kxlYKz
