"How do they know HootHoot is called HootHoot?"

I don’t know much about Pokemon lore, but I assume that they know a pokemon’s Species name (in the anime at least) by hearing what it says. A trainer would find a Pikachu, hear “pikachu” and know it’s called a Pikachu. So, when they discovered HootHoot, how did they know it was called HootHoot and not just Hoot, or HootHootHoot?
