"Pokémon Type Ecology of the Kanto Region"

The Kanto region is the hub of activity for the greater location that includes the Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh regions. Its largest population of Pokémon types are Poison, closely followed by Water. Poison types are weak to Psychic and Ground types, each having only 14 species existing in the region. Despite this, the Poison types still outnumber the combined individual species populations of Psychic and Ground by 5 species. Their flourishing may come from a weakening of their predators and prey. Poison types are strong against Grass and Fairy, but many of the Grass types in the region have a secondary Poison typing (9 species). 5 species in the Kanto region were only 'recently' acknowledged as being a Fairy type and with Poison being the dominant typing, it is possible that other Fairy species existed and have since gone extinct or migrated to other nearby regions. There is additional evidence of this if the Dark and Dragon types are speculated on. There are no known Dark type Pokémon in the Kanto region (excluding mega evolution), though, are more numerous in neighboring regions. There is also only one family line of Dragon types in the region. It is possible that, prior to the Fairy type’s population being reduced, the Fairy type cleared out all Dark type species and significantly reduced the Dragon type population to a single family line. What those Dark type species might have been is currently unknown, but it is possible that certain Dragon type family lines, such as the Gyarados, Charizard, Aerodactyl and maybe even Exeggutor lines, may have survived by changing their Dragon types. An eradication of the Dark type species may have also led to the Psychic types becoming more powerful in the region, only being checked by the Bug and Ghost types; neither of which have much footing in the region. Although abundant, the Bug type choices are weak, averaging at a base stat total of ~411 for the fully evolved, excluding the Scyther and Pinsir species, which may be under endangered species protection in the Safari Zone. The Safari Zone may act as an endangered species reservation, especially considering the Dratini family line can only be found here, meaning that its the only line to have been preserved from the near-extinction level event potentially brought on by the Fairy type in this region. The most scarce population of Pokémon types, after the Dark type, is the Steel type. Only 2 known species exist in the region, that of Magnemite and Magneton, which are in the same family line. It’s not known whether there were formerly existing species of the Steel type that were somehow eradicated or if the Magnemite line were the only ones introduced to the region (less likely). Ghost types may have also been reduced significantly due to the potential existence of Dark types, with the Gastly family line retaining its hold thanks to its secondary Poison typing (to help reduce Fairy types). It is possible that in the earlier times of the Kanto region, there was a greater abundance of Dark, Dragon, Ghost and Steel type Pokémon. Fairy type Pokémon are theorized to have come from extraterrestrial origins, so it is plausible that many species of Fairy types may have hitched a ride on a comet (or something else) that impacted the Mount Moon area. The impact may have caused species such as Aerodactly, Kabuto and Omanite lines to go extinct and the Dragon and Dark type Pokémon of the region were significantly reduced or eradicated by these invasive species of Fairy types. In regards to the Steel types, it is possible that during the Great Pokémon War that Kanto had some involvement in, the Steel types, known for their amazing defenses, were used more heavily. The over-use of this type for warfare could have reduced their numbers to just the Magnemite family line. It is not known exactly why there are fewer Steel types in the Kanto region as compared to the Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh regions. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/eQr1RTK
