"Starter Pokémon have a serious variety problem."

With the avalanche of leaks this week, the final evolutions of the Starter Trio have been revealed.I'll not go over the designs themselves, since that's a whole other contentious topic, but what struck were the type combinations of them.If people want to remain unspoiled, I first question why you even clicked on this post and second, stop reading now.Fuecoco's final evolution is Skeledirge, a Fire/Ghost type.Sprigatito's final evolution is Meowscarada, a Grass/Dark type.Quaxly's final evolution is Quaquaval, a Water/Fighting type.What's 'wrong' with these typings?The secondary types are all the same one's we had in Legends: Arceus and Ghost, Dark and Fighting are the most common secondary types from all starters Pokémon.Not counting the obvious Grass, Fire and Water types and sticking to mainline games and 3rd evolutions only, we've had:Flying: 1xPoison: 1xFighting: 6xGround: 2xSteel: 1xPsychic: 1xDark: 4xGhost: 3xFairy: 1xThis means that Rock, Bug, Ice and Dragon have not been represented at all, Electric and Normal exclusively in spin-offs and that Fighting-type has appeared more times than the other unique types combined.Infamously, Fire/Fighting has appeared 3 times in a row, but now we also have two Fire/Ghost type starters in a row as well.I get the argument that those three types are good to balance with and have a good interaction between them, but it makes the franchise just that bit more boring and repetitive when they keep reusing the same types for arguably the most important kinds of Pokémon in the games. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/hm2AuES
